Welcome to episode 3 of 24-7 Health News, sponsored by Sage Life Therapeutics. The topics that I will be discussing are from my blog at 247healthnews.com or topics that are important to health and fitness. Because these topics are important to your health, I will be trying to break down some of the more important, complicated ideas and help them be applied to your daily life. My name is Shay. I'm a master trainer and a holistic health coach at Sage Life Therapeutics. So let's do a few disclaimers. My information is not meant to prescribe or be taken in lieu of a discussion with your doctor or health care professional. You should always speak to your health care professional before making nutrition or fitness changes. I'm a health coach and as such, I'm making recommendations only in that capacity. I will not be talking much about COVID, although it's still a little bit of an issue. I think there's a lot of information out there already, and I don't want to be giving my opinions. My blog will have content, some COVID stories, but I prefer to discuss health, fitness, and wellness. I may, though, if there's some crossover, suggest you read something for yourself. But not if I can help it. So our topic today is how your genes affect your nutrition. So if you remember, in episode one, I talked about how exercises are affected by your genes. So this is kind of a part two situation where now you put it together with your nutrition and you can get the whole picture. And I'll tell you how to get access to this information at the end of the podcast. So anyone who has ever struggled to lose weight, along with their trainers, knows that there is no single best diet or nutrition plan for everyone. The biggest reason for that is our individual genetic makeup. Everyone has a unique genetic makeup that impacts everything from how we utilize protein and fat to whether we absorb iron from the foods we eat. Knowledge of these individual differences is a powerful tool. Just like I discussed with the exercise, it applies to nutrition across the board. Nutritional genomics is the study of the interaction between an individual's DNA and nutrition and health. It can also be a more general study of the overall human genome and nutrition. Researchers in this field look at how foods and nutrition impact human genetics and how genetics inform the body's response to nutrition. So we have to realize that because everyone is different, one person processes a piece of broccoli different from the next person. So while researchers are working to uncover generalities about the human genome and nutrition, it is also possible to get individualized data for trainers and clients. It is this personalized information that will give us more information about genes or mutations in genes that impact how we absorb our micronutrients, gain weight, and utilize macronutrients. This is super important. So you can set goals that are more reasonable with regard to your diet. We can recommend various ratios with regard to macronutrients specific to your body with this information. Nutritional plans can be created specific to your body. Instead of you just grabbing the next diet plan that your friend used, we can look at how these things impact your body and then make things specific, completely tailored to you. This can also happen with workout plans. So a DNA-based nutrition report will include a lot of information about how to utilize the nutrients, including macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals, based on genetic differences and variations in how nutrients are absorbed and how they are used in your body. And this will help your overall maximize your health and wellness. So just to give you a for instance, with regard to macronutrients, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, most people have a normal genome type for protein utilization. Those who do should consume about 15 to 30 percent of their daily calories in the form of proteins. Their ability to lose weight will not depend on protein intake. The less common people with an enhanced genome type means that the individual will be able to lose weight more effectively and efficiently when a higher portion of their diet is protein, about 25 to 30 percent. So this specific information gives you much more clues than the sort of try-it diet situation that we're doing here. Did I lose weight if I use the try-it diet for seven days, or do I need to tweak it? We will have those tweaks based on this specific report and taking a look at your genes. So let me give you one more, for instance, the ever-popular fat that people like to think they need to cut out of their diet. As with protein, most people fall into a normal category for fat utilization. Their weight loss seems to be independent from the percentage of fat in their diet in the calorie intake, if their calorie intake is reasonable. Those who test for a low genine gening genue, I can't even get it out, genome type, should consume a smaller portion of fat, about 15 to 25 percent. This will aid in weight loss maintenance because now we know your body is not utilizing fat well, so we should lower the intake of fat that you take. So that's just a couple of examples. I mean, I have a little bit about carbohydrates too, and it's very similar to fat. Um, if you're normal, you're okay, you won't see any major differences. If your genes are normal based on how they utilize uh carbohydrates, you won't see any major differences in weight loss. But if you have an enhanced or low, we have to adjust how many carbs you take in. So micronutrients, which by that I mean vitamin A, B6, B9, B12, C D, calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc. So these are less important for weight loss, but it is good to have this overall information about how your body is using them. You can figure out, you know, all kinds of things about the fact that your body is not using calcium well. That can contribute to issues with bone density and all kinds of stuff later in life. So certain genome types can tell you if you're absorbing the nutrients adequately. This is important to know for health, but can be also useful for nutrition and weight loss. Um, so another for instance, if you have a low genome type for B12, which means you tend to be deficient, low levels of B12 can cause anemia and various types of serious health risks and make you more, which will make you more fatigued and tired when trying to get the workout in. So this is you know, the this is a huge drive in health and fitness and wellness to me, because if you have this information, it becomes super specific how a personal trainer helps you and shapes your your program, your workout program as well as your nutritional uh programs. We do have other bits and pieces to these um to these DNA style uh reviews. So let's take a look at something like cholesterol. You know, so certain health measures like cholesterol are impacted by genes as well. You could be sensitive or highly sensitive in your response to in your cholesterol's response to dietary fat. This means that your cholesterol level tends to increase more rapidly with fat intake as compared to someone with a normal genome type. They need to be more careful about the fat content in their diets if you have a sensitive to highly sensitive sort of uh gene representation. So these things um become very clear and it and it shows you how to change your lifestyle to live more healthy and become more fit and comfortable. One of the other ones that's really interesting, and there's a whole host of genes, and I'm not going to go through each and every one of them in this talk, but what I want you to know is that getting this test to me will jump you, you know, forward so far when you start to try and learn how your body is take is dealing with the nutrients in your body in various different ways, as well as the exercise, as I discussed in um episode one. So getting this individualized DNA report really is revolutionizing health and wellness and fitness. So, of course, um I'm certified to help you get this information. So, all you need to do is DM me in Instagram, and I will help you at uh HHcoach Shay.
